TERMS & CONDITIONS
 

​1. The 2019 Dobell Drawing Prize is an acquisitive prize, which means that the prize-winning drawing will automatically become part of the permanent collection of the National Art School. The $30,000 prize-money includes the National Art School’s acquisition of the work.

 

2.The 2019 Dobell Drawing Prize is only open to Australian citizens or permanent residents of 12 months or more who are over the age of 18.

 

3.Each competitor may enter up to two works only. An entry fee of $50.00 including GST is payable for each artwork entered.

 

4.The size of the artwork must not exceed 6 square metres (e.g. 3m x 2m, 1.5m x 4m etc.). Please note that the wall height in Gallery 1 at the National Art School Gallery is 4.15 metres, floor to ceiling and the wall height in Gallery 2 at the National Art School Gallery is 4.8 metres, floor to ceiling.

 

5.Works submitted must have been completed within 12 months of the closing date for entries, which is 31 October 2018.

 

6.Medium: there are no limitations to media, however artists are asked to describe the nature of their drawing practice in an artist’s statement as part of the entry requirements.

 

7.Works will be judged on their technical and graphic qualities.

 

8.For the first round of selection, three judges will each compile individual shortlists from digital entries.

 

9.The judging panel will convene in January 2019 for the second round of selection. Together they will review the digital compilation of shortlists and select approximately fifty finalists for the 2019 Dobell Drawing Prize.

 

10.Finalists will be notified by the National Art School 

 

11.Finalist's artworks must be delivered personally or by an agent to the National Art School between 9:00am – 5:00pm, Monday 11 March – Friday 15 March 2019.

 

Artworks must be clearly marked on the back with the artist’s name and address and the title of the work.

12.The declaration on the entry form must be completed by the competitor.

 

13.Unframed or unmounted works will only be accepted if they are protected in suitable casing. This measure is to help the National Art School protect your work, which will be moved around frequently during the judging process and then storage/ exhibition layout. While every care will be taken in handling the works, neither the Dobell Foundation nor the National Art School will be responsible for any loss or damage whatsoever caused to any work while in its custody. Each competitor is responsible for maintaining his/her own insurance coverage.

 

14.The competitor grants the National Art School Gallery permission to display the work: 1) in an exhibition of selected finalists for the 2019 Dobell Drawing Prize at the National Art School Gallery from Thursday 28 March to Saturday 25 May 2019 and 2) at venues other than the National Art School Gallery in an exhibition of all or some of the finalists for the 2019 Dobell Drawing Prize, including in a tour of regional New South Wales and/or Victoria in 2019 and 2020.

15.Artworks that are selected for hanging in the 2019 Dobell Drawing Prize must be collected from the National Art School Gallery at the end of the exhibition tour, on or before 21 December 2020, at a date to be advised by the National Art School.

 

16.No payment will be made by the National Art School for freight or other charges incurred in the delivery or return of any entry

 

17.Artworks that are selected for hanging in the 2019 Dobell Drawing Prize may be available for sale through the National Art School Gallery. The sale price listed on the entry form is final and includes GST and a 30%commission.

 

18.The National Art School’s commission on all sales is 30%.

 

19.Entrants consent to their work being reproduced by the National Art School, and the media in any NAS publication, website and third party site in relation to the National Art School, and in all advertising and publicity for the 2019 Dobell Drawing Prize and Exhibition, and to be photographed for research from the date of submission until the collection of the work. The winning entry may also be reproduced in the Sir William Dobell Art Foundation Annual Report and in other publications produced by the Foundation.

 

20.A complete list of finalists will be available on the 2019 Dobell Drawing Prize and Exhibition website from Wednesday 6 March 2019.

 

21.The winner of the 2019 Dobell Drawing Prize will be announced on Wednesday, 27 March 2019.

 

22.The judges' decision is final and no correspondence shall be entered into.
